Growing Together – Independence Day at Bumblebee Preschool

Introducing young children to belonging, community and shared national identity.

Pottuvil, Eastern Sri Lanka · Sri Lanka Independence Day

Community Learning Activity

Hosted at Bumblebee Preschool, Pottuvil.

Learning about community begins early.

During an Independence Day celebration at Bumblebee Preschool in Pottuvil, young children came together around one of Sri Lanka’s most recognisable national symbols — the national flag.

The activity provided an age-appropriate opportunity for children to experience a shared national celebration, participate alongside their peers and build an early sense of belonging within the wider community.

Different stories. One community. A shared future.

A national moment, experienced locally

Sri Lanka marks Independence Day on 4 February, commemorating the country’s independence in 1948.

At community level, the occasion can also provide an opportunity for children to encounter national symbols and participate in a shared moment of reflection and celebration.

Learning through participation

For young children, understanding community does not begin with formal lessons alone.

Shared activities, symbols, stories and celebrations can help children develop an early awareness of the place and community they belong to.

The Independence Day activity created a simple, visual and participatory learning experience appropriate to an early-childhood setting.

Growing up together

Early childhood is where many first experiences of community take shape.

Participating alongside other children in shared cultural and national occasions can help make ideas such as belonging, respect and community more tangible.

Growing Together reflects a simple principle: a shared future begins with children learning how to experience their community together.
